USDA Hardiness Zones tell you which perennials survive your winter minimum. Know your zone before you buy anything. Zone 5: -20F. Zone 8: 10F.
Sun requirements: full sun (6+ hours direct), partial sun/shade (3-6 hours), shade (<3 hours). A plant labeled 'full sun' in partial shade won't bloom well. A 'shade' plant in full sun will burn.
